I will be finishing up math testing of Friday. Please let me know if your child will be absent, or checked out that day.

A note from Mrs. Liston,

Re: 0923-0927 Chinese class

Parents,

Visit the school website for a link to schedule your Parent Teacher Conferences which are held the evenings of Oct 1, 2, and 3rd and during the school day of the 3rd. Please plan to bring your first graders with you, so they can show off their Chinese!

Please continue to check and discuss Class Dojo points with your child. We are very impressed with their hard work in the classroom!

If you have signed up to volunteer in Miss Wayman's room, watch for an email containing the final schedule.

 A note from Mrs. Liston,

Dear Parents,

Most students have started recognizing Chinese characters in the class. Last week the students used manipulatives to practice how to make 8, 9, and 10 in the math lessons. Students will practice more by doing the math homework. Some students are struggling in counting numbers. Please help your child count from 1 to 120 in English at home. In the interconnection lesson, we learned to recognize safety traffic signs, school and community helpers.

Thank you again for all your support and help.

We would also like to thank Miss Gonzalez-Arce for preparing the Mid-Autumn (Moon festival) activity for the students.

Homework:

Math: making 8 9 10, and find the missing part of 10
Chinese: Reading Lesson 1 & 2

Reading: Read at least 20 minutes everyday and record on the pink September calendar.

Life Skill: Tying your shoelaces (on average, teachers in first grade tie 7-10 shoes a day)

In class, we are learning:

Math- Subtraction Concepts

Language Arts- Common and proper nouns, verbs

Writing- Narrative Stories with at least 3 events (and details), spaces between words, periods

Phonics- short o (as in hot), Capital and Lowercase Letters

Chinese- Lesson 3, How old are you?

Social/Science study- Life Cycles (butterflies)

Spelling Words: lot, job, hop, not, stop, dog, off

Please continue to check and discuss Class Dojo points with your child. We are very impressed with their hard work in the classroom!

 A note from Mrs. Liston,

Dear Parents,

In Chinese class, the students have learned how to make/add up to 4, 5, 6, and 7 in math. We have more math homework this week. You can use any kind of manipulative to help your child with math homework. For example, you can use candy and cereal (m&m, starburst, skittles, or fruit loops) to help your child do math homework. I know the Chinese lessons are getting harder and harder. In average, students are struggling to recognize each Chinese character, and some students are struggling to write Chinese characters. Please encourage your child to keep working hard. In class, we gave students a small reward to encourage their learning. We hope this way can motive them. Some parents have been volunteering and are helping pull out the worksheets from the Math book, and some have been helping individual student learn math at school. We appreciate all of your hard work to help your child at school. Thanks again.

Homework:

Math: add 0, making 4 5 6 7, and problem solving
Chinese: Reading and Writing (Lesson 1, Hello)

Reading: Read at least 20 minutes everyday and record on the pink September calendar.

Life Skill: Tying your shoelaces (on average, teachers in first grade tie 7-10 shoes a day)

In class, we are learning:

Math- addition concepts, story problems, number sentences

Language Arts- Common and proper nouns, "Say and Slide" reading strategy, using the first letter/sound of a word.

Writing- Narrative Stories with at least 3 events, spaces between words, periods

Phonics- short i (as in pig), Capital and Lowercase Letters

Chinese- Lesson 2, What is your name?

Social/Science study- School Helpers and Community Roles

Spelling Words: did, big, it him, in, will sit (we only work on these 2-3 a week in class, check out this website for kinesthic ways to practice at home. http://www.allaboutlearningpress.com/how-to-use-kinesthetic-spelling-activities)
