Chinese Lesson #17 - Pets

We are learing about household pets. During circle time Mrs. Liston will be asking the children what type, if any pets you have in your home, as well as if they are cute. Have them practice saying I have a... at home, or, I do not have any pets in my home (see sentences below).

 If the vocabulary word for your pet is not listed, encourage your child to ask us at school in chinese what the word is, e.g., lizard zhong wen zen ma shuo? {how do you say lizard in chinese?}

Pin Yin Pronunciation Helps

These are common phrases that the children are saying in class. Pin yin is listed first and then my own version of the phonetics in the next column (phonetics in parentheses for the numbers).

Key sounds to remember:
i -i is a buzzed continuation of the consonant following z-, c-, s-, zh-, ch-, sh- or r-. Most of the time it just makes an "r" sound
a as in "father"
e "uh"
ai "eye"
ei  "hey"
ao ow as in "cow"
ou as in "so"
an as in "ban" in British English (a more open fronted a)
en as in "taken"
ang  "angst"
eng ung and in "hung"
er ar in "bar"

Help with Chinese Homework

Each Monday I am going to post the chinese lesson for the week on this blog. The lesson will include the vocabulary words, how to use those word in "action" and then sentence practices. I will list the pin yin (without tones), and the english translation after each chinese character. These sheets will go home with the children each week as well and will include the pin yin tones.

I realize that pin yin is like another language and will post some pronuciation helps as well.

This week we are working on sports and exercise. The children need to be familiar with the following vocabulary words:
