Parent Meeting Notes

Here are the important things you might have missed from last night:

1. Each class will have it's own homework folder.
Miss Wayman's homework folder will come home everyday, and should therefore be brought back to class everyday. All information/forms from the school, will be brought home in this folder.
Mrs. Liston's homework folder will be brought home each Monday, and is due by Friday.

2. Spelling words will come home, via hard copy, every Monday. Spelling tests will be given on Friday.

3. Parent Volunteer signups.
If you are still interested in volunteering (and have not yet signed up), please let Miss Wayman or Mrs. Liston know.
Every volunteer is required to have a background check. This is to ensure the safety of your children while at school. The cost is $15 and is done through Mrs. Hoover in the office.

4. Check out www.betterchinese.com for an online program on teaching your child Chinese. There is a small cost, but this is not required.

5. Miss Larsen will be sending out an email school wide, to offer Rosetta Stone at a much discounted price. Watch for further information.

6. Overall, students are enjoying class and come home everyday having learned new concepts in English and Chinese!!! 8 days in, and going strong!

Update from Miss Larsen, Principal of Alpine Elementary:

1. Class will be held from 9:00 - 11:45 a.m. (a slight change from before)
2. Please drop students off by the main entrance. There will be signs directing you to the classroom.
3. Parents, please do not stay with your students. Miss Wayman and I will be in the room for the first part of class to help explain what is happening.
4. Please pick them up at 11:45 a.m. in front of the school.

We are very excited for the students to come and experience a little of what class will be like this year. Mrs. Liston has some fun activities planned and will teach them some procedures that will help them have a successful start to the year. Miss Wayman will also begin administering a reading assessment during this time.

Just a couple of other items:
1. Please remember that the beginning of first grade is often difficult for first graders. It may even be more difficult with the Chinese language. Prepare yourself and your students for this. Don't give up!

2. Class lists will be posted on our school website (http://alpine.alpinedistrict.
org) at 3:00 p.m. on August 17 and on the front doors of the school at 5:00 p.m.

3. Open House will be held on Monday, August 20 from 4:30-6:00 p.m. This will not be as vital for your students since they will have already met their teachers, but please still drop by with your students. Miss Wayman and Mrs. Liston will look forward to seeing you.

4. We will hold a Back to School Night for parents during the second week of school. I will have the date for you next week. This will be a great opportunity to come and talk to the teachers and ask questions. They will also have additional information for you.

5. Please remember that Mrs. Liston cannot speak English in front of your students (even at Open House and the days next week). If you would like to speak to her, please contact her through email and she will set up a time to meet with you. She will provide you with her contact information at Open House.

6. In order to compensate for the students' learning styles and preferences, we will switch every six weeks who goes to English first and Chinese first. We will give you more information on this at our Chinese Back to School night once school gets started.

Thank you for your patience and support and we get things started. We are all excited for the opportunity to work with your students this year. Thank you for entrusting us with your children!

A Little Bit about Miss Wayman

Reading is one of my most favorite hobbies! Magic Tree House, Ivy & Bean, and Amelia Bedelia are a few of my favorite books.

My favorite vacation spot is Bear Lake.

This will be my 4th year of teaching, and every year I love it even more!

If I won a million dollars, I would travel all over the world.

I have 4 nieces and 3 nephews; two of which are in first grade this year at different schools.

Snow! I love the snow!
